Baby Kaleb's Medical Needs
Donation protected
Two nights after Christmas my little sister, Jessica, was awaken in the middle of the night to find her 5 month old baby, Kaleb, convulsing. Kaleb has not been a very good eater since birth and he had been gradually losing weight. Thinking he was simply dehydrated, they pushed fluids. They thought that they had gotten things under control until a few days later when he started convulsing again. This time they rushed him to the ER. The local hospital was not equipped to handle his situation so he was transferred 3 hours away to Texas Children's Hospital in Houston. He was checked into the Pediatric ICU where he underwent testing and was diagnosed with Diabetes Insipidus, a hormone disorder that effects the way he metabolizes water and salts.
After a few days in the PICU he was finally stabilized enough to move to the standard pediatric unit. He underwent MRI's, EEG's, Ultrasounds and relentless blood testing over the past week as the teams of specialists work around the clock to try and stabilize his blood levels and his seizure activity. Through all of this testing the doctors found out that Kaleb not only has Diabetes Insipidus but also has hypothyroidism and a GI condition. They are currently testing his liver to determine if the increased liver enzymes may be the result of a liver disorder.
Kaleb's parents, Jessica and Todd, are both still in college. When they found out that they were pregnant Jessica was a freshman at Stephen F. Austin (SFA). She decided that in order to give her baby the best life possible she needed to get a degree quickly. She made the difficult decision to dropped out of SFA and continue her education on the fast track program to an associated degree at the local community college, while maintaining a full time job throughout her pregnancy. Like many young couples, Jessica and Todd and have struggled financially working their way through college and trying to support themselves. Now, in light of Kaleb's medical conditions and mounting medical bills they don't know where to turn.
Their baby is still in the hospital and they desperately want to be by his side but they are feeling the pressure to return to work. They are young, they have student loans and no savings. What they desperately need right now is some financial support so that Todd can return to work and Jessica can stay home and make sure that their baby is taken care of properly. He will need daily hormone supplements and intense monitoring over the next few month to make sure that his conditions are stable and that the treatments are working. Proper administration of his medication crucial. Any mistake made could be life threatening which is why it is imperative that his parents be present and in control of his medications for the next few months.
Most of Kaleb's conditions are chronic and he will require 3 to 4 daily prescriptions, which are not covered by insurance. The hospital bills are astronomical and even with insurance the out of pocket expenses could still be overwhelming. Without financial help they will have no option but to bounce Kaleb between different babysitters everyday, which could be detrimental. He needs his parents and consistency. Our goal is to give this family enough support so that they can focus on their baby and not have to worry about the their regular expenses for a little while.
Any monetary amount is appreciated along with prayers and good thoughts. We will post updates on Kaleb's diagnoses as we receive them. Please help this young family through this difficult time. Thank you to everyone for your support!
