Kayla and the Locke family have received the news no one was praying for. After weeks of appointments, scans, travel, and waiting, Kayla’s biopsy has shown glioblastoma.

Doctors are still waiting on one final layer of genetic testing to better understand the exact type and how to treat it, but they have made it clear that aggressive treatment needs to begin quickly. Kayla will likely begin radiation within the next one to two weeks. Once treatment starts, she may need to be away from home for up to six weeks, most likely traveling to Minnesota for care. The final biopsy results may adjust parts of the treatment plan, including the amount or timing of chemo, but the urgency remains the same.

 While this diagnosis is devastating, there are a few pieces of hope they are holding onto. Doctors believe they caught this early, and one of the tests showed that the tumor has a weakness to chemo, which is not always the case.

 The financial burden has already been overwhelming. Because they are self pay, it was $5,000 just for Kayla to be seen at the Mayo Clinic, and a $133,000 bill for  her biopsy. That does not include travel, lodging, food, continued medical care, treatment, bills, or the everyday expenses that do not stop during a crisis.

 Neither Kayla nor Adam have been able to work during this time. Kayla has also had to refund many client sessions while navigating this diagnosis and preparing for treatment. These funds will help their family in every possible way. Medical care, travel, Airbnb, meals, gas, bills, time away from work, and giving them room to breathe while they focus on Kayla’s health and their kids.
