Support for the Horan family (Joe & Kate)

On September 4th our family experienced a life-changing accident. As has been the tradition for many many years, the Horan family gathered at Reeds Beach for Labor Day weekend. August weekends are typically filled with crabs - checking crab traps, emptying crab traps, cooking crabs, eating crabs....Saturday, September 4, 2021 was no exception. Joe, his brother, niece, and her boyfriend gathered supplies to go empty crab traps at the docks that morning.

 

While waiting to turn into the marina just a mile down the road, a pick-up truck rear-ended their car going at full speed without ever applying brakes. Although there were injuries sustained by others in the car, Joe suffered the life-altering injuries. He was immediately aware that he could not feel his legs after the car rolled to a stop. Joe was taken from the scene and air-lifted to trauma center at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City. Once ascertaining that his injuries were beyond what they could treat there, Joe was again in the helicopter to head to Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia where their spinal surgical team got to work.

 

Joe has remained in the hospital since his surgery and awaits his transfer to a rehabilitation facility to start the hard work needed to return to his active and happy life. He still is paralyzed from the chest down and the prognosis is uncertain. There are so many people who have asked how they can help. Joe, Kate and Grace will need financial support to make necessary changes to their home in order for Joe to be able to be an integral part of their household once again. The funds raised here will go directly to the medical needs and adaptations that will be necessary for Joe to return home.

 

There are no words to express our gratitude to our friends and extended families who jumped into action immediately. Joe has an army behind him, and there is no doubt he will come through this dark time stronger than ever. Thank you so much for all the love and support you have shown our family already.
