October 20th, our family had the scare of our lives. What was meant to be a family fun day, turned into my husbands fight for his life.
Back story: My husband and I took our babies to the pumpkin patch. We had an awesome day spending time with Daddy, until an unfortunate accident happened. We stopped to eat lunch and Sean got a "walking taco." For those who don’t know what it is, it’s a bag of chips with and bunch of taco toppings on top. Sean took a bite and had a hard time swallowing. He tried coughing it up and even washing it down with a drink, it only got worse. I rushed him to the hospital where he was airlifted to Louisville.
The chip had punctured through causing a laceration to his esophagus. He underwent a 6 hour surgery to repair the damage. Although the surgery was a success, we were shocked to have learned the extent of his injuries. The hole in his esophagus was A LOT larger than we had anticipated, which caused more problems. While waiting for treatment, fluid had leaked and caused an infection around both lungs. A feeding tube was placed in his belly which he will have for about 6 weeks, a tube in his small intestines, and two bilateral chest tubes on each of his sides to drain the fluid. He was kept on the ventilator for a few days due to the reaction his body was having from the infection in his chest.
Update: God is GOOD all the time! Sean was given a second chance at life and we could not be more thankful. We have been home for a little over a week now, and although the road of recovery has started.. we are aware that this road is going to be long and tough at times.
Sean is a Surgical Tech at Murray Calloway Country Hospital, but he will not able to work while recovering. Sean has been our sole provider for the last two years while I've given birth to our 1 1/2 year old and 8 month old. We were aware of him not being able to work during this time but was not prepared to find out that he is ineligible for short term disability.
Aside from providing for the needs of our family here at home, we have rent, utility bills, a car payment, child support, medical bills and expenses. Sean is is still requiring feedings from a feeding tube, is on a steady dose of antibiotics to make sure infection doesnt return, and we will continue to have to drive to and from Louisville for doctor follow ups. (Which is a four hour drive from our house and we already had to make this trip twice this past week.)
As you can tell, our family REALLY needs help during this transition and difficult time. Your love, prayers and support has been such a blessing to us already. We ask, if you are able to.. please help our family. Even if it is just a prayer.
THANK YOU!
