After only 48 years, on Sunday, June 2nd, Jeff “JD” DeVore, peacefully left this world to prepare for eternal rest, joining his mom and dad.
He leaves behind his children, his wife, his sister, nephews and niece. JD was with Sanya, the love of his life, for 24 years. They have two beautiful children: Jacob, 13, and Jenna, 11. His children meant the world to him and he loved teaching them the ways of the water.
Originally from Palos Verdes, JD lived in San Diego for 30 years. He had amazing lifelong friendships that developed when he was growing up in Palos Verdes, attending Palos Verdes High School, and while he was a student at Point Loma Nazarene University. He chose to make OB and Point Loma his home and could always be found on either side of The Point – surfing and fishing with his OB Loc 1502 crew.
JD was, at his core, a free spirit who loved the sea – a passionate fisherman, a maritime educator, a youth mentor, a legendary surfer, a comic - JD always had a way of lighting up a room, or a boat deck, with his jokes and good energy. He was soulful, compassionate, and most of all, genuine. JD befriended everyone and went out of his way to make people feel included. JD’s strong faith was reflected in his art that contained various religious symbols. Though he loved pursuing his passions on the water, JD proudly hung up his hat to begin a new career serving his country at the Department of Defense.
Unfortunately, JD struggled with autoimmune issues his entire life. The last two years were especially difficult. He passed, unexpectedly, as a result of complications from this illness on Sunday.
Sanya, Jacob and Jenna are understandably shocked and devastated. We want to start this Go Fund Me to help them pay for his medical expenses, funeral service, and the kids’ tuition so they can remain at the School of the Madeleine, which they have attended for the last 4 years.
The family is so grateful for the outpouring of love and support they have received. From the surfers, to the fishermen, to former classmates and colleagues, to the kids’ friends, they have quite a few communities wrapping their arms around them right now. JD’s death has been overwhelming and unimaginable, but with our support, we can help make this difficult time a little more bearable.
