Support for the Davenports

On Saturday afternoon, March 20th, while me and my family were visiting friends in Lynchburg, we got a call from our neighbors informing us that the shared roof of our town home was on fire.  No one was inside or injured at either our house or the affected neighbor's at the time. We briefly spoke to the fire marshal on the phone and he asked for permission to break into our home to fight the fire.  We of course gave permission and started the hour and a half drive home.  When we got there the street was filled with first responders,  who had arrived at the scene 3 minutes after they got the call.  They had finished extinguishing the fire and even taken the time to remove the most important and endangered personal property before doing their work.

Even though the actual fire damage to the home was minimal, the measures taken to ensure the fire was extinguished caused a lot of damage to the home.  The roof above the office was removed along with the wall by the chimney.  Water collapsed the ceiling in our children's room and then did the same to our living room.  The power to the home is cut off and the heat pump was destroyed by burning debris from the roof. Other than that and the structural damage, our only losses are some furniture that got drenched.

With overwhelming support and help from friends, family, neighbors, and the greater Charlottesville community, we were able to get the water out, clean up the debris, remove soaked carpeting, and pack most of our belongings to be moved into storage while we find temporary housing.  Our immediate needs for housing are being met by gracious friends while we begin to work with our insurance to start rebuilding.

Our family is incredibly blessed to not have been adversely affected financially by the pandemic.  People have been asking for ways to support us and since this is all new to us, we don't yet know what we need, or what insurance will cover.   We are figuring this out as we go and have no idea what the next month will look like.   We have created this fundraiser for those who have asked to give.  Since we do not yet know what to expect there is a chance we will raise funds that we don't end up needing.  If that is the case, we will donate any extra funds to the Albemarle County Department of Fire Rescue.  Without them, we wouldn't have any home or belongings left; and we are deeply indebted to their service and expertise.  The investigation into the cause of the fire is still on-going.
