On November 30th, the Curtiss family’s lives were shattered. Mathew Curtiss lost his long and courageous battle with depression. He fought harder than most will ever know—as you’ll see in the photos and memories shared—but ultimately the pain he carried became too heavy. He went out for a drive and never came home.
Mat was often described as “the nicest asshole you’ll ever meet,” a title he wore with an odd kind of charm. He always—always—made sure his friends were okay, even when he wasn’t. He was goofy, so goofy. A true tech wizard who could fix, build, or explain anything with wires or code. He loved cars. He loved showing off anything new he was proud of. He was gentle and kind… unless he was playing MTG with his brothers and close friends. Then all bets were off.
To say the Curtiss family, and everyone who knew Mat, is devastated doesn’t come close. “Gutted” is more fitting. There is a Mat-shaped hole in the world that cannot be filled.
As Kim painfully put it, we’re “existing somewhere between the pain of losing you and the joy of loving you.”
Mat and Kim were a cosmic pairing—two unique souls who fit together effortlessly. This past April, they bought their first home. A home that was meant to be filled with more laughter, more love, and more pranks. Instead, it now holds memories too heavy for its walls.
Adding to this heartbreak, Kim had just lost her father figure two weeks before losing Mat.
As Kim and the Curtiss family navigate a colder, quieter world without Mat—during the holidays, of all times—please consider helping shoulder some of the day-to-day burdens to provide them with the space and safety to process their grief
