Help My Mom Brother & I Survive the Cold — We’ve Been Without Heat All Winter ❄️
My name is Christopher Barber, and well before Thanksgiving, my mother, brother and I (Along with other residents) have been living without heat in our condo home at The Marylander in Hyattsville, Maryland. Despite paying regularly and now increased condo fees almost 100% double the regular condo fees, our heating system failed after someone from the homeless encampment broke in and stole a part from our community boiler room and it has not been fixed since.
Our home was even declared “unfit for human habitation” by Prince George’s County due to the heating failure — yet we still have no heat and have nowhere else to turn to at the moment.
Every day we bundle up in heavy layers just to try to stay warm, and all we have is one single space heater that trips the breakers and leaves us without electricity occasionally throughout the days.
This situation has forced us into unbearable conditions:
• ❄️ No functioning heat all winter
• Space heaters that overload the electrical system
• County inspectors calling our building “uninhabitable”
• ❤️ My mom, brother & I are trying to stay warm, safe, and healthy this winter.
We paid our condo fees. We followed the rules.
Yet we’re spending winter bundled in coats indoors, trying to stay warm in our own home.
We’ve contacted property management and waited — but year-end temperatures are still freezing and the system is still broken.
