Heaven has gained another angel.
Some of you may already know that our best friend’s mother, Lucila Avila, passed away on Monday, January 14, 2019.
As friends of her daughter, we were lucky to have known Lucila for over 20 years. Lucila watched us grow into the grownups we are now – all the while taking strays in – whether they were blind squirrels, homeless cats and dogs or needy teenagers; she was always there and available to help and be the mom we all needed and loved.
Before we all had places to call our own, anytime we wanted to throw a party, get together for Friendsgiving, birthdays or BBQs, Lucila’s home was always open to us. Lucila would fill our stomachs with her delicious Colombian empanadas and amazing ají - green sauce which was always the perfect amount of spice – which was interesting because she couldn’t eat spicy food and never tasted it herself.
Lucila’s generosity, humor, smile, and hugs will be missed but never forgotten. She has touched all of our lives in so many ways. If Lucila was still here, I think she would agree with us saying that one of her proudest accomplishments is our friend, Esther, Lucila’s youngest daughter. Esther is one of the funniest, intelligent, fearless, and best advice giver we have ever known. We believe this is all due to the guidance and love Lucila and her father, Luis, gave her. We are forever grateful to Lucila for creating and shaping this beautiful woman, Esther, and bringing her into our lives. We can’t choose our family, but we can choose our friends, and we will choose Esther over, and over, and over again.
Since Esther is the youngest, Lucila’s older children, Claudia and Neil had to endure teenagers running around the house, eating all the food, hogging up the steps in the front of the house for so many years. Whether Claudia and Neil know it or not, the 3 Avila children gained about a dozen more siblings over the years, as we feel like members of the Avila family too - we all love you and share in your grief.
Not only has the passing of Lucila been emotionally difficult for everyone, it has also been financially trying for the family. Esther’s friends have put this GoFundme site together to raise money for funeral expenses. For those who wanted to send a message to the family or asked how to contribute, you can donate through this link. All contributions are greatly appreciated. Whether you had the pleasure to meet Lucila or not, know that she was an incredible woman, wonderful mother, amazing grandmother, loving sister, and daughter.
