My name is Yvette Demond, and I have been caring for my nephew, Terrence Arthur Grant, since he was just three and a half months old. After Hurricane Katrina and Rita, I moved to California and was able to get custody of Terrence there. We recently moved back to Louisiana so Terrence could be closer to family and learn about his roots. Through storms, evacuations, and even building a house to keep us from being homeless, I have always put Terrence’s needs first.
Since returning to Louisiana, I have struggled to get any assistance for Terrence. His mother is struggling with addiction, and his father is breaking into houses and in and out of jail. I am exhausted and can only focus on caring for Terrence, who means everything to me. Despite going to county buildings and social services, I have not been able to get help. I am disabled and have done everything I can for Terrence, but I am tired and need support. Terrence is growing so fast—he’s an honor roll student, a sweet and caring boy, and he deserves every opportunity to thrive. But as he grows, his needs grow too, and it’s been hard to keep up with daily expenses like bills, clothing, and shoes.
I have always been the “village mom,” helping everyone around me, but now I am asking for help for us. Any support you can give will help us cover the essentials and make sure Terrence has what he needs. Thank you for everything. I truly appreciate any help anyone can give. Your kindness means the world to us.
