Temperance is a bright and energetic 5-year-old who loves playing outside with her brother, helping her dad with projects around the house, and spending time with her dogs and cats. She’s always happiest when she’s surrounded by her family or pretending to be a princess. Recently, Temperance needed to undergo urostomy surgery at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. What was supposed to be a short three-day stay turned into a much longer and more difficult journey when her kidneys failed after the procedure. She is now on temporary dialysis, and her recovery is uncertain as her medical team works to help her kidneys regain function.

Our family lives four hours from the hospital, and we’ve had to take leave from work to be by Temperance’s side. Her grandparents are caring for her brother and helping us move, as we were in the middle of relocating when this medical emergency happened. The unexpected length of our stay has created financial strain, and we’re seeking help to cover meals, gas, and bills while we remain at the hospital with Temperance. Being able to stay in her hospital room is a relief, but the costs of daily life away from home are adding up quickly.
