Hello everyone, my name is Gladys Porfirio and I am the niece of Anselmo Valdez - lovingly known as Temo or “papi” as my mom would call him. He was the youngest of my uncles and despite his tough appearance, he had the kindest soul.
Temo immigrated from Guerrero, Mexico at just 17 years old with only the clothes on his back. My uncle quickly adapted to the city life and its expectations, instantly learning English through music and conversations, worked tirelessly bussing tables at busy restaurants in the West Village and door-dashing orders across the boroughs. Besides being an extremely hard-worker, Temo also had a huge passion for the arts. He would occasionally share with us his pencil drawings and tattoo designs that he was most proud of. Eventually, he joined a tattoo apprenticeship and worked on building his clientele. To us, he was more than an artist. He was a loving brother, a caring son, a fun uncle, and a considerate friend.
During the week of Thanksgiving, a holiday that is meant to celebrate our deep gratitude with loved ones, our family was struck by devastating news. On the night of November 23rd, 2025, Temo was involved in a fatal motor vehicle accident while working. That night, he innocently sent my aunt a video of a puppy he encountered on his delivery route — his last message to us, and the last time we heard his laugh.
My grandparents in Mexico are devastated by the loss of their youngest son and are anxiously awaiting his return. All donations will go directly toward covering his funeral expenses in Mexico and the repatriation process. We sincerely appreciate your time and support reading about my uncle’s story. My family will continue to cherish the beautiful moments we shared with Temo, finding the strength and courage to continue to live in his honor.
