On Saturday morning, Lau woke up to the smell of a fire. He went straight to the utility room to find it full of smoke. Luckily, (or maybe unluckily) the door was shut that night, so the smoke didn't fill the whole house. The fire had, again very luckily, put itself out before compromising the gas lines that were very close to the outlet that was the source of the problem. It was an electrical fire but right next to the gas boiler. The breaker box should have tripped; it didn't. Come to find out, the breaker was set to handle a much higher capacity than the actual wiring for this electrical line. At any rate, we're very lucky the fire died down and all we woke to was the smoky aftermath. [be sure to click Read More!]
This could have been so much worse.
The house is also made of cement, which saved this from spreading, much unlike the average house in the US that would have all gone up in flames. On top of the fear of a gas explosion, the neighbor's house is very close to ours on that side, and it could have affected them as well. We're very lucky things were not worse as it is, and this is not a GoFundMe for losing our entire home - or worse.
So now what?
Luckily, we have had the help of family to watch Lily and get help to clean and paint and get the room and the house safe again for us to be in the main living space. We had an electrician come by to temporarily get electrical safe for the weekend, and he'll be here to install new outlets, breakers, wiring, etc. We also are trying to schedule a specialist for the gas boiler as that is no longer working as well (We currently have no heat and hot water!) It was already not working properly before this happened, so it seems this is the time for replacement.
Thank You.
We greatly appreciate our communities reaching out so far to offer words of encouragement and support. We decided to create this fund due to multiple requests to help, asking if we were going to set up a fund and us facing the reality that everything will be much more expensive to fix than we can really afford in a timely manner; we're still trying to pay off big loans for this house as it is! The funds will be used for clean-up and repair supplies, replacing appliances, and professional services. While our emergency is small in comparison to so many others that weren't as lucky as we were, we appreciate those who are willing to ease this time for us in one way or another.
