Nicholas and Patrick Tonic were tragically laid to rest in 2004. Though years have passed, they still rest without a proper grave marker. This GoFundMe is being launched to raise funds for a headstone that honors their memory and gives their loved ones a place to visit and remember.
As a mother of two boys, this cause is especially close to my heart. I am their cousin and grew up with Nicholas and Patrick—spending countless days, nights, and summers in their home. I have fond memories of being part of their family. Black men deserve to grow old. Unfortunately, this did not in happen for my young cousins. For that reason, it feels only right to create this fundraiser on behalf of their mother, Ms. Susan Carrillo-Baker (formerly Tonic).
In December 2003, Nicholas disappeared. His remains were recovered in January 2004. He was only 19 years old when his life was taken. His death remains an unsolved case. Susan has fought tirelessly for justice, reaching out to local media and the Anne Arundel County Police. Thanks to her persistence, the case is now receiving renewed attention and remains under active investigation.
Here are a few articles that share more about Nicholas’ case and the efforts to seek justice:
Tragically, less than three months later, Patrick—only 16 years old—passed away from a sudden medical condition. Losing both sons in such a short time was a devastating blow to their mother and the entire family.
Though they both had respectful homegoing services, the cost of providing a proper headstone has been overwhelming. Any donation, big or small, will help give Susan a step toward closure and ensure there’s a permanent place to honor and remember her sons.
They were sweet boys who never had the chance to grow up, start families, or live full lives. Their mother will never see them grow old—but she deserves a peaceful space to mourn and remember them.
Sadly, their father passed away in 2015.
All donations received will go directly to Susan, who is listed as the beneficiary of this GoFundMe.
Funds will be used for the headstones and the associated cost of installation.
Thank you for your kindness, support, and generosity.
