We are deeply saddened to share the heartbreaking news of the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Sumon Hati, on February 23, 2026, at 3:55 PM IST. He passed away due to complications from ulcerative colitis, which ultimately led to respiratory failure. His sudden loss has left an immeasurable void in our department and in the hearts of everyone who knew him.
Sumon joined IU Indianapolis in 2019 as a PhD student and, through years of unwavering dedication and perseverance, successfully defended his doctoral thesis on December 17, 2025. Reaching this milestone was a testament to his resilience, brilliance, and relentless passion for scientific discovery. He was not only an exceptional researcher but also a kind and humble human being whose curiosity and commitment inspired everyone around him. His enthusiasm for science, his thoughtful discussions, and his quiet determination will always remain a part of our academic community.
It is extremely painful to accept that we will no longer see his warm smile in the lab or hear the passionate scientific conversations he loved so much. Sumon’s journey was marked by hard work, integrity, and a deep love for learning. As friends, colleagues, and members of the same department, we hope to honor his memory by continuing the pursuit of knowledge with the same sincerity and brilliance that he embodied every day.
During this profoundly difficult time, we are organizing a fundraiser to support his parents with funeral and memorial service expenses. We humbly request your support and generosity. Any contribution, no matter the amount, will provide comfort to his family and stand as a tribute to a brilliant mind taken from us far too soon. Let us come together as a community to remember Sumon Hati and to carry forward the legacy of passion and excellence that he leaves behind.
