On Saturday at 4:00 p.m., our family received the devastating call that our beloved uncle, Steven Mejía, had been rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Doctors told us that the next 48 hours would be crucial. Without hesitation, our family dropped everything and traveled to Spokane, Washington, to be by his side.
Steven had been shot in the face while protecting someone else. The injury tore a major artery, cutting off blood flow to his brain for nearly six hours. Although surgeons were able to stabilize him after emergency surgery, they could not determine what his recovery would look like.
On Monday, our worst fears became reality. Steven was declared brain dead, and there was nothing more the medical team could do. Before this tragedy, Steven had made the selfless decision that if he were ever in this situation, he did not want to remain on life support. Honoring his wishes was one of the hardest decisions our family has ever had to make.
As the investigation has unfolded, we have learned that Steven was an innocent victim. He had accepted a ride from someone he knew, and when they arrived at her home, her boyfriend became jealous and attempted to shoot her. In an act that reflects the kind of man Steven was, he stepped in to protect her and took the bullet himself. While there are still many details we do not know, one thing is certain: Steven did not deserve this. He spent his final moments protecting another person's life.
Steven was a loving son, brother, uncle, family member, and friend whose kindness, courage, and selflessness touched so many lives. The pain of losing him so suddenly is unimaginable, and our family is now faced with the emotional and financial burden of laying him to rest.

Aunque los cirujanos lograron estabilizarlo después de una cirugía de emergencia, no podían determinar cuál sería su recuperación.
El lunes recibimos la noticia más dolorosa de nuestras vidas. Steven fue declarado con muerte cerebral y ya no había nada más que los médicos pudieran hacer. Antes de esta tragedia, Steven había expresado claramente que, si alguna vez se encontraba en una situación así, no quería permanecer conectado a soporte vital. Respetar su voluntad ha sido una de las decisiones más difíciles que nuestra familia ha tenido que tomar.
Conforme ha avanzado la investigación, hemos sabido que Steven fue una víctima inocente. Él había aceptado un aventón de una joven que conocía y, al llegar a la casa de ella, el novio de la muchacha, cegado por los celos, intentó dispararle a ella. En un acto de valentía que refleja el gran hombre que siempre fue, Steven la protegió y recibió el disparo en su lugar. Aún desconocemos muchos detalles de lo ocurrido y de los hechos que llevaron a esta tragedia, pero hay algo que sí sabemos con certeza: Steven no merecía que esto le sucediera. En sus últimos momentos, dio su vida tratando de salvar la de otra persona.
Steven fue un hijo, hermano, tío, familiar y amigo amoroso. Su bondad, valentía y generosidad dejaron una huella imborrable en todos los que tuvimos el privilegio de conocerlo. Su pérdida ha dejado un enorme vacío en nuestros corazones, y ahora nuestra familia enfrenta el dolor emocional y la carga económica de darle la despedida digna que merece.
