Hey there, everyone!
My name is Jessica and I work at a VCA emergency animal hospital in Tustin California.
On Sunday night, Stella was brought into our clinic and was surrendered over to me by her owner. Stella is a 2yr old female terrier/pitbull mix and it was clear to all of us working that evening that Stella had been neglected for quite some time.
Stella is currently severely malnourished and weak. Stella’s fur was soaked and stained with urine and was covered in fleas, and had scabs covering her body. Her owner had admitted to keeping her in crate. When the owner had brought her in they stated that they had hosed her off before bringing her in.
The owner had also stated that Stella had been sick and that she was refusing to eat. The owner added that Stella has been in this condition since February and then later revoked her statement and said that Stella has been in this condition since October. When we had offered some food to Stella after she was brought to us, she ate very well.
Our vet presented a treatment plan to the owner but the owner was unable to cover the cost for any sort of treatment. The owner had reached out to their mother to see if she could help, which she did and paid the cost to run bloodwork. Fortunately, there were no obvious signs that Stella had any sort of organ failure. Some of her levels were elevated but given her condition, her bloodwork was not as critical as it could have been.
Our vet believed that Stella has a strong chance of making a full recovery with treatment and relayed that message to the owner’s mother. The owner’s mother declined paying for further treatment in case for any reason Stella did not make it. She also felt that the owner was clearly incapable of caring for Stella.
This meant the only option would have been to euthanize Stella.
As I was standing there with Stella, she nuzzled my hand and seemed desperate to receive affection. I could see in her eyes that she did not want to give up and in that moment I knew in my heart that I needed to step up and take action to do everything I could to help her.
Our vet spoke to the owner about surrendering her over to me and the owner agreed to do so.
I am now fully responsible for Stella.
Stella will need to be hospitalized for a bit longer and our vet is wanting to run more diagnostics to rule out any sort of underling issues. At the moment we have not ruled out if Stella has any sort of underlining issues.
As of April 5, 2023, Stella has made small but significant improvements since she was brought in. She’s eating very well and is slowly starting to stand and walk on her own… Stella has happy tail wags now too! Stella has a long road ahead of her but the cost of her treatment will be costly. Any contribution towards Stella’s care will be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!
