Stefan was admitted into the ICU late Sunday night with pancreatitis and an issue with his blood. They were attempting to get his pain under control and him stabilized when he stopped breathing. They were able to revive him and he’s currently on a ventilator, medically paralyzed and sedated. When they ventilated him, he aspirated so fluid in his lungs has made things difficult. The dr’s have him on his stomach to help with his oxygen levels. They’ll continue to rotate him as needed.

Stefan was transferred to Texas Health Presbyterian Dallas and is currently in critical but stable condition. His kidneys are beginning to shut down, so doctors say he will need dialysis. Right now, the biggest concern that his sodium levels are extremely low. If doctors raise his sodium too quickly, it could cause permanent brain damage. Therefore, it must be done very slowly and carefully. They will see if they are able to do a CAT scan on the brain in approximately 24 hours. Because of the sodium levels, they cannot start dialysis yet. Over the next 24-48 hours, the medical team will focus on safety bringing his sodium levels up and then possibly try to wake him from sedation. He has multiple very serious issues happening at the same time, so the situation remains uncertain. Stefan remains very critical and the medical team is taking one step at a time.

During this incredibly difficult time, Kim is doing everything she can to stay by his side while holding everything together. Stefan is the sole provider for their family, the sudden financial strain has been overwhelming. Between the cost of a hotel near the hospital (with him being in ICU they do not allow anyone to stay at the hospital), daily meals, travel, and other unexpected expenses the burden is growing each day. We are asking for support to help ease some of that pressure so she can focus on what truly matters right now - being there for Stefan and taking things one day at a time.
