Hi everyone!
I'm Sydney, Skylar's sister.
On July 3rd, Skylar woke up with extreme vertigo and nausea. We thought she might be dehydrated but took her to the ER to be safe. The doctors ran a CT scan and immediately found that the lymph nodes behind her lungs were quadruple the size they were supposed to be– a significant indicator of Lymphoma Cancer.
On July 4th, she was admitted to the hospital for a biopsy. After a gruesome and anxious week and a half of waiting for results, on July 15th, we found out Sky has Hodgkin's Lymphoma. She went in for a PET scan and met with her Oncologist shortly after we received the news. Thankfully we caught the cancer early as it is Stage 2.
Sky will be starting chemotherapy on August 18th. In preparation, she has been undergoing IVF these past few weeks to freeze and retrieve eggs through surgery. Chemo would have limited her ability to have kids. IVF has looked like giving Sky 3 shots daily, blood work 4x a week, and seeing her doctors every other day. Her egg retrieval surgery is on August 16th. The process has been painful and highly emotional for Sky, but she is so grateful for the support of family and friends.
Our spirits have been high, knowing that Sky will be okay. In her oncologist's words: "This is the best case cancer scenario." Obviously, cancer sucks, but we caught it early and are hoping she will only need two rounds of chemo. After the two-month mark, the doctors will do another PET scan to re-evaluate.
As the saying goes– when it rains, it pours. In addition to Sky's diagnosis, we lost my Grandma (My Mom's Mom) late last night. It has been a tough few months, but we are thankful to have our faith and the support of our community. Although life threw a hurricane at us, we are believing that the best is yet to come.
We will keep everyone updated.
Lots of Love,
Sydney
