Support for Sis. Yvonne's Emergency Medical Debt

Dear Friends and Supporters,

My name is Sarah Lewis, and I am reaching out to you with a heavy heart during a recent and challenging time for our family. While attending my sister’s destination wedding in Mexico, our mother Yvonne Lewis, fell critically ill the night of her arrival and was unable to breathe on her own. She was then rushed in an ambulance and required immediate hospitalization. Our mother was in a life threatening situation that demanded aggressive treatment and stabilization in the ICU.

Unfortunately, the hospital required a staggering $19,000 deposit before treatment could commence in addition to the $850 ambulance fee that needed to be paid upon arrival to the hospital.

Each day she remained in the ICU added another upfront cost of $15,000 to her bill, with threats of being discharged without payment. Our family and friends had to come together and pool our resources to ensure she received the care she desperately needed before they put her out of the room prematurely, prior to being stable.

To compound this unfortunate situation, her travel insurance denied coverage for her hospital expenses because she was admitted just a day before the policy took effect. Our mother is now back in the States, recovering, but the financial burden has had a significant impact on our family, while trying to pay everyone back.

While family members and friends who were wedding guests generously covered the deposit amounts to ensure her treatment, they will not be reimbursed by her travel insurance. We are now seeking to bring together support for those who helped my mother during this crisis. Our goal is to address the unexpected debt incurred to our family members and friends who assisted with the upfront costs of her urgent hospital needs.

We have set a goalline of $21,650 to help us repay those who stepped forward in our time of need.
