Shirley Guthrie, my wife, was diagnosed just last week with advanced liver bile duct cancer. The news came as a shock to both of us, and the doctors at UVA have confirmed that her cancer is aggressive and growing quickly. She had breast cancer 5 years ago and won against it. Has had essential tremors surgery with an implant in her brain . Diagnosised with chirrosis of the liver 8 years ago, now the liver cancer .Right now, her survival rate is between 7% and 15%, and the medical team is working hard to come up with the best treatment plan for her. We are both on Social Security, and our financial resources are very limited, which makes this situation even more overwhelming.

We need to travel to UVA twice a week for Shirley’s treatments, and each trip requires us to stay at a motel. Unfortunately, insurance does not cover all of these expenses, and the costs for lodging, travel, and medical care are adding up fast. The stress of managing these bills on top of Shirley’s diagnosis has been incredibly difficult for us both.
