On October 17, 2026, a training exercise at CFB Wainwright in Alberta ended in tragedy, killing four Canadian soldiers and injuring many others. Among one the lives taken was Sgt. Morgan Wong.

Left to mourn Morgan are his father Chek Ming, his wife Laura, his older sister Megan, Chek’s partner Kelly, grandparents, numerous relatives and many friends. Morgan is predeceased by his mother, Hong Kiaw Tan. Morgan was loved by and cared for by so many people, and the unexpected news of his passing has been devastating to everyone who knew him.

Morgan’s Commitment to Serving

Morgan’s commitment to serving the community and helping others lead him to joining the Canadian Armed Forces in 2017. In 2024, he accepted the call to train and deploy to Latvia. While in Latvia, his work ethic was recognized by his senior leadership and resulted in an extension to continue to serve in Latvia. During Morgan’s deployment he met his beloved wife, Laura. Once Morgan returned to Canada, his dedication and love for serving his country was not complete. He continued leading training courses in Wainwright which led Morgan to start training in Wainwright for a second deployment to Latvia.

Morgan was an incredible person serving as an active member in his community through volunteering with St. John Ambulance and Big Brother Big Sisters of Edmonton. Morgan was raised in Edmonton and was a big Oilers fan. Apart from this and the military, Morgan completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree at the University of Alberta and achieved certificates in real estate and civil-military leadership. After graduation he was hired as a financial analyst for the Government of Alberta and quickly worked his way up to manager. In his short life, Morgan achieved so much.

Who Morgan was to us

Our names are Nirbhay Bondili, Adam Roth, Hersh Srivastava, and Anthony Yin. We met Morgan when we attended Vernon Barford Junior High School from 2012-15. Throughout our years together Morgan became a central part to our friend group. He was known for bringing us together no matter the circumstances. Although many of us moved to different cities, Morgan made sure we had plans to get together as soon as we were back in town. Everything about Morgan will be missed, his sarcastic humor and ability to convince you of anything with a straight face, but also his caring side. He kept up with all our personal lives and always knew what was going on with each other. We all have stories where Morgan would give us a really thought out gift without any specific occasion. He was always there for us at a moment's notice, whether we needed his help or just wanted to hangout. Through everything he did, he showed us how much he cared.

Goals of the fundraiser

Morgan had signed a full time contract with the reserve forces and it was during this transition phase that he had lost his life. Unfortunately, the reserve does not have the same benefits for the family as the regular forces. His loss has not only left an emotional strain on the family, but a financial one as well.

Donations will help support the family in a various amount of ways, including:

  • Unexpected expenses related to the funeral and estate of Sgt. Morgan Wong
  • Financial strain associated with time away from work
  • Travel expenses for family to and from Edmonton
  • Covering financial support Morgan provided to the family
  • Other unforeseen expenses that arise

We already have seen first hand the great emotional toll that the loss of Sgt. Morgan Wong has put on his family. As time has passed since the incident, we have started to understand the financial toll this tragedy has put on the family. It is already very difficult to deal with the loss of a son, so we want to give the family one less thing to worry about, and we hope that together we can make that possible for the family.

Standing Together for Morgan and his Family

Throughout his life Morgan was someone who always brought people together and cared for people. Whether it was through the military, his involvement in the community, or the people closest to him, Morgan was always there for others and wanted to help people. Now, we want to bring people together and do the same for his family.

Although this fundraiser is for Morgan’s family, we also want to acknowledge the others who were affected by the tragedy at CFB Wainwright. Our hearts go out to all the families, friends, and loved ones who have been affected by this awful tragedy. We hope that they are all receiving the support they need through this difficult time

Whether you knew Morgan personally, worked with him, knew of him, or just want to help, any support would be greatly appreciated and would mean a lot to his family. No matter the amount, every donation will help ease the financial stress on Morgan’s family and help them focus on grieving their son.

If you are unable to donate, sharing this fundraiser with your friends, family, coworkers, or anyone else you think would want to help out would be greatly appreciated. Your support means a lot to the family and we really appreciate all those who want to help and have already helped.

Morgan was always there for us and did so much for the people around him without expecting anything in return. No family should have to deal with the loss of their son. Although there is nothing we can do to bring him back, we hope that we can all come together by helping his family through this devastating loss — just as Morgan would have done for us.

This fundraiser is organized by Nirbhay Bondili, Adam Roth, Hersh Srivastava, and Anthony Yin on behalf of the family. All funds will be directly deposited into his father, Chek Ming Wong’s, bank account.
