Hello, this is Eddie’s mum and P.A. Cheryl and we would love to help out one of our Sealyham friends who needs some support…
This is Dylan. He’s just 4 years old and a Sealyham in his prime. Unfortunately, he started showing some unsettling symptoms which were tell-tale signs of back issues. It’s every owners worst nightmare.
He suddenly developed a reluctance to manage a small back door step and his gait changed. After numerous tests the vet suspected he had grade 2 IVDD and suggested if his condition should deteriorate they would be on stand by to refer to a neurologist for an MRI scan.
Vanessa (his mum) was advised by our amazing community and made the decision to get the MRI done as soon as possible. He was able to get the MRI straight away at Davies Vet Hospital which led to a firm diagnosis of disc herniation. So, as result of this, Dylan has undergone surgery and they are now hoping he can make a good recovery!
The hospital rang at lunchtime today (Friday) to say he’s being a very good boy. He’s doing well but still has weakness is the rear legs which is to be expected after surgery. He still has a drip attached as he has an upset tummy possibly due to the anti inflammatories.
The good news is that Dylan may come home Sunday or Monday!
Whilst navigating Dylan’s sudden decline, his mum has had her own health issues to deal with and interspersed with vet visits are her own visits to the oncologist. Her next chemotherapy will be at the start of November, so her and Dylan will be spending time together, both regaining their strength and finding their feet.
Dylan is insured, but like many policies, it has a maximum pay out, which doesn’t stretch to cost of MRIs and specialist IVDD surgery. Unfortunately, there is a short fall for his treatment of approximately £4000.
Our community is so kind and generous, I was hoping that between us we could help out a fellow Sealy person during their darkest times. As Vanessa says herself, he’s worth every penny and we can all identify with that and know how precious our Sealyhams are to us.
I’m in regular contact with Vanessa and she will send me the details of Dylan’s treatment from the vets and update us on Dylan’s progress so we can all see and hear how he is doing.
We wish Dylan all the best for his recovery, and hope that he and Vanessa can support each other in the coming months, as well as a the love and kindness from the wonderful Sealyham community.
Thanks so much.
