Ruben Renteria was more than just my first cousin—he was my favorite cousin and a lifelong friend. We grew up together and shared over 50 years of memories. Ruben was always supportive, loyal, and kind, touching the lives of everyone around him. His mother, my aunt, is 87 years old and was his best friend. Their bond was unbreakable, and she is now facing this loss while dealing with her own health challenges. Ruben also leaves behind two sisters who are devastated by his passing. They have asked me to organize this fundraiser on behalf of the family, as they are struggling to cope with this loss.

Ruben battled kidney disease for many years, spending a decade on dialysis while waiting for a transplant. Just as hope was on the horizon, doctors discovered a heart issue that needed to be addressed before he could receive a new kidney. He underwent open heart surgery in San Francisco, over 230 miles from home, and faced numerous appointments and mounting expenses. Tragically, Ruben passed away in his sleep at home just weeks after his surgery. He was only 58 years old, and his passing was completely unexpected. Because of this, life insurance was never purchased for him.

We are now raising funds to help with funeral arrangements, travel costs for his medical care, and the many copays that added up over the years. Ruben was unable to work and used most of his and his mother’s savings to get by. They are now financially exhausted.
