What's Riwaq Beirut? (pictures below)


The explosion in Beirut on August 4 has destroyed Riwaq's physical space and the houses and belongings of many members of its community. 

Since 2016, Riwaq Beirut has been more than a café and an open space for cultural, artistic and social events - it has been the heart and soul of a community. 

It’s a space to socialise, to gather, and to celebrate; a space that attracts and forms a community that supports each other and stands in solidarity with everyone disadvantaged and suffering from the many systemic problems in Lebanon.

It hosts tens of cultural activities, workshops, live concerts, discussions, movie screenings, book readings, drag shows, gallery events, emergency response - all to support its community. 

After the explosion, the Riwaq community is in need of all the help it can possibly get, now more than ever before. 

As most in Lebanon, Riwaq and its community have been suffering from the severe economic and financial crisis with hyper-inflation setting in, from a state that’s failing, and from the COVID-19 outbreak and lockdown measures. Due to the devastating consequences of the explosion on August 4, the Riwaq community is now in need of all the help it can possibly get. 

Our aim:
What we can do for this community is offer financial help and that is why we aim to collect an amazing amount of 10.000 euros. 

You can truly help us by giving what you can. Every donation will help our beloved Riwaq in trying to recover as best as it possibly can. Let's show them there's a big international community that is here for them.

How will the money be spent? 
The money will be spent on Riwaq's recovery from the explosion. It will help rebuild its physical space - resources, materials, labour - and provide its team with an income.
Beyond that, your donations will help support members of Riwaq’s community who have lost their houses, businesses, and income opportunities. So, anything we collect will go to Riwaq and be extended to those in need due to the explosion.
The financial support will be distributed based on an assessment of the most urgent needs, such as:
-windows of Riwaq Beirut, and of neighbours' apartments
-doors (wood and glass)
-electric cables
-ACs
-wood work for bar, shelves, tables and chairs
-painting
-staff salaries and rents

Who are we?
We are close friends of the Riwaq team and community. We're from The Netherlands and Germany. I (Linda Mattes) am currently in Germany but will return to Beirut, Lebanon very soon, where I am based. I will retrieve the money we collect through this campaign and will hand it over to the founders of Riwaq Beirut.

Les explosions dans le port de Beyrouth dans la soirée du 4 août 2020 ont gravement endommagé les pièces de notre bien-aimé Riwaq Beyrouth, mais aussi les maisons de tous nos employé.e.s et de notre communauté d’ami.e.s.

Depuis 2016, Riwaq Beyrouth n'est pas seulement un café, un bar et un centre culturel, mais surtout le cœur et l'âme d'une communauté sociale à Beyrouth. Il offre un espace ouvert pour les réunions et les rassemblements et représente en première ligne la solidarité avec tous ceux.celles qui sont à la merci d’ attaques constantes et des désavantages causés par les conflits systémiques de la société libanaise.

 Riwaq organise constamment de nouveaux événements culturels - ateliers, concerts en direct, discussions, projections de films, lectures, drag-shows, expositions et événements caritatifs. Tout cela pour une communauté qui se défend solidement les uns les autres.

 Après les événements du 4 août, Riwaq Beyrouth est plus que jamais dépendant de l'aide et de la solidarité extérieures.

 Comme la plupart des entreprises et des sociétés au Liban, l'aggravation de la crise financière et économique au Liban a durement frappé Riwaq - hyperinflation, appareil d'État défaillant, COVID-19 et mesures de quarantaine... Après l'explosion dévastatrice, toute forme d'aide et de soutien pour Riwaq Beyrouth est désormais nécessaire.

Notre objectif :

Ce que nous pouvons faire actuellement, c'est apporter une aide financière au personnel et aux ami.e.s de Riwaq Beyrouth. Nous visons une somme de 10 000 euros.

Chaque don aide - faisons en sort qu’ensemble, l'idée d'une communauté et solidarité internationale soit à la hauteur de sa réputation.


Comment l'argent sera-t-il utilisé ?

Tous les dons iront directement à Riwaq Beyrouth - ils aideront à reconstruire les locaux - à se procurer des ressources, des matériaux et de la main-d'œuvre - et surtout à créer un moyen de subsistance pour tous les employé.e.s dans un avenir proche. En outre, vos dons permettront de soutenir tous nos ami.e.s et les membres de notre communauté autour de Riwaq qui ont perdu leur maison et/ou leurs sources de revenus. Ainsi, chaque centime ira à Riwaq Beyrouth et sera également reversé à tous ceux qui ont besoin d'aide. Bien entendu, il sera décidé de qui a le plus besoin d’aide en priorité. Une liste transparente de nos dépenses sera transmise après réception des paiements.

Qui sommes-nous ?

Nous sommes des ami.e.s proches de l'équipe Riwaq, nous vivons à Beyrouth depuis longtemps ou y vivons encore. Nous venons d'Allemagne et des Pays-Bas - deux d'entre nous se rendront bientôt au Liban pour apporter les dons au Liban et les remettre directement entre les mains des propriétaires de Riwaq Beyrouth.

Nous sommes incroyablement reconnaissant.e.s à tous ceux.celles d'entre vous qui prennent le temps de nous aider à soutenir un groupe de personnes que nous aimons de tout notre cœur. Merci beaucoup! Cela signifie pour nous vraiment immensément.

Die Explosionen im Hafen Beiruts am Abend des 4.Augusts 2020 haben die Räume unseres geliebten Riwaq Beirut, die Häuser aller MitarbeiterInnen und unserer Freundesgemeinschaft schwer beschädigt.

Seit 2016 ist Riwaq Beirut nicht nur Café, Bar und Kulturzentrum, sondern das Herz und die Seele einer sozialen Gemeinschaft in Beirut. Es liefert einen offen Raum für Begegnungen und Zusammenkommen und steht an allererster Stelle für Solidarität mit all denen, die den ständigen Angriffen und Benachteiligungen durch die systemischen Konflikte der libanesischen Gesellschaft ausgeliefert sind.

Riwaq organisiert ständig neue kulturelle Veranstaltungsreihen -  Workshops, Live-Konzerte, Diskussionen, Filmvorführungen, Lesungen, Drag Shows, Ausstellungen, sowie Benefizveranstaltungen. All das für eine Gemeinschaft, die in Solidaität füreinander einsteht.

Nach den Ereignissen des 4. Augusts ist Riwaq Beirut mehr denn je auf die Hilfe und Solidarität von außen angewiesen.

Sowie die meisten Geschäfte und Unternehmen im Libanon hat die sich verschärfende finanzielle und wirtschaftliche Krise Riwaq schwer getroffen - Hyperinflation, ein versagender Staatsapparat, COVID-19 und Quarantänemaßnahmen... Nach den erschütternden Explosion ist jetzt jede Form von Hilfe und Unterstützung für Riwaq Beirut bitter nötig.

Unser Ziel:

Das, was wir im Moment leisten können, ist finanzielle Hilfe für die MitarbeiterInnen und FreundInnen von Riwaq Beirut -  dafür streben wir eine Summe von 10.000 Euro an.

Jede Spende hilft - lasst uns zusammen dafür sorgen, dass die Idee einer internationalen Gemeinschaft ihrem Ruf gerecht wird.

Wie wird das Geld verwendet werden?

Alle Spenden gehen an Riwaq Beirut - sie sollen dabei helfen, die Räumlichkeiten wieder aufzubauen - Ressourcen, Materialen und Arbeitskraft zu beschaffen - und vor allem auch eine Lebensgrundlage für alle MitarbeiterInnen für die nächste Zeit schaffen. Darüber hinaus sollen eure Spenden all diejenigen unserer FreundInnen und Mitglieder unserer Gemeinschaft rundum Riwaq unterstützen, die ihre Häuser und/oder Einkommensquellen verloren haben. Jeder Cent geht also an Riwaq Beirut und wird darüber hinaus an alle, die Hilfe benötigen, weitergegeben. Dabei wird natürlich danach entschieden, wer am dringendsten Unterstützung braucht. Eine transparente Auflistung unserer Ausgaben wird nach Erhalt der Zahlungen weitergegeben werden.
 

Wer sind wir?

Wir sind enge Freunde des Riwaq - Teams, haben selbst lange in Beirut gelebt oder leben noch immer dort. Wir kommen aus Deutschland und den Niederlanden - zwei von uns werden bald in den Libanon reisen um die Spenden in den Libanon zu bringen und direkt in die Hände der Inhaber von Riwaq Beirut zu übergeben.

Wir sind euch allen, die sich die Zeit nehmen um uns dabei zu helfen, einer Gruppe an Menschen zu helfen, die wir aus ganzem Herzen lieben, unfassbar dankbar. Vielen, vielen Dank! Es bedeutet wirklich die Welt.
