Richard “Shag” Wheelington is facing a challenging road ahead after a series of serious medical setbacks. In November 2024, Shag underwent neck surgery, followed by a lower back surgery in February 2025. Just as he was working through his recovery, he suffered a tractor accident on May 24, 2025, that left him with a severe compound fracture of his right leg and a shattered ankle. He had emergency surgery and will be facing multiple surgeries to follow. These events have forced him to use up all his paid time off and sick leave, leaving him without income for the next 4-6 months as he recovers from this most recent accident.

Shag is a long-time friend and classmate, and a proud graduate of OPHS. He lives in Union Parish and has been a dedicated reserve deputy with the Union Parish Sheriff’s Office since 2019. In recognition of his commitment, Shag was honored as the 2023 UPSO Reserve Deputy of the Year for his outstanding support of the community. His selfless service has touched many lives, and now he needs our help.

Funds raised will go directly toward Shag’s mounting medical bills and daily living expenses while he is unable to work. Supporting Shag during this difficult time will help ease his financial burden and allow him to focus on his recovery.
