** The story in Reem’s words

It was around 9 pm, Gaza local time. We had a light supper, and everyone went to bed. We moved our beds into the living room, so we were all together. I tucked my kids in and kissed them on the forehead.

On the early hours of Saturday, 11th November, everything changed forever. Everyone was asleep when our home in the Nuseirat Refugee Camp in the Gaza Strip was targeted by two Israeli airstrikes.

The entire place suddenly lit up. I heard a loud whistling sound in my ears and felt my face burning. I was trapped and suffocating under the rubble. Realizing we were bombed, I started reciting my final prayers.

Then, I heard the voices of my children, Mohamed, who is 7, and Reema, who is 13, screaming for me and their father, Hussein. But they couldn’t hear me. I was stuck under the rubble, unable to move.

I suddenly heard Hussein's voice, so I started screaming for help. He screamed as loudly as he could, so neighbours could hear us and come to our rescue. People gathered and managed to pull me out. Hussein said the ceiling had fallen on me, and he feared I had been torn apart. It's a miracle I survived, but the pain is indescribable.

Mohamed's and Reema's wounds were severe. Mohamed's face was bleeding, his mouth open, and his teeth had fallen out. Reema had massive, deep burns, and her face was unrecognizable.

The airstrike had thrown Yousef, 16, just under the house. Our neighbours found him. He was unable to move due to fractures and burns, so they carried him out.

When Hussein repeatedly called out to Rama, 15, and Lana, 10, there was no answer. He knew then that they were killed. People began to search for them with Hussein. They found Rama mutilated and Lana dead from injuries to her head and shoulder.

At that moment, everything changed forever.

Minutes later, paramedics arrived and moved us to Al-Owda clinic in the Nuseirat Refugee Camp. The doctors and nurses could not help due to the severity of our injuries. So, they moved us to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir Al-Balah city.

It was the longest journey of my life. I couldn't stop thinking about my injured children nor unsee the bodies of my daughters who were killed. My life as I knew it is over.

At the hospital, we were immediately admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. A team of doctors and nurses surrounded us. They applied anaesthetics to me. The last thing I remember before going under was the screams of my children.

Over the next nine days, a series of surgeries were performed on me and my children.

On 20th November, we were transferred to Egypt for further medical treatment. The journey from Gaza to Cairo was unbearable.

We arrived at a Cairo-based public hospital. Although our medical status is severe, we received only average medical attention. The staff here are doing their best to help, but resources are limited.

It's now been over a month in Cairo, and the progress in our medical status is slow.

The hospital management informed us that they'll discharge us soon to make room for other patients.

We can't return to Gaza now, nor can we move to another public hospital in Cairo. Our only option is to move to a private hospital in Cairo to continue our treatment.

We can't afford the costs of a private hospital. Therefore, we need your help.

I am a dentist, and my husband is a pharmacist. We had a good life with our kids.

However, since the events of 11th November, I have no clue when I will be able to return to practice my profession. The same goes for my husband.

Our home was completely destroyed.

Our treatment plan is expected to last for at least 6 months.

** Current medical situation written by Egyptian doctors

Reem

Reem is a 42-year-old woman who has suffered multiple injuries and burns. She sustained multiple fractures, including distal coccyx fracture (lower back fracture), right cheek bone fracture and a 3rd degree burn affecting approximately 30% of her body surface area.

The cheek bone fracture seems to be partly affecting Reem's sinuses on the same side, causing persistent nasal discharge which might potentially be leaking cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Furthermore, the injury on the right side of the face is causing chronic headache and has potentially caused facial nerve damage and subsequent loss of sensation in the right upper jaw area.

Reem has also sustained significant tympanic membrane rupture (eardrum tear) and balance difficulties.

In terms of her burns, she has made a slow recovery. However, she has been left with multiple scars related burns. She is currently on significant amount of analgesia (pain relief medication) to control the pain caused by the multiple fractures. Reem will likely need further assessment for the nasal discharge and the potential CSF leakage and will also likely need tympanic membrane (eardrum) repair.

Yousef

Yousef is a 16-year-old boy, normally fit and healthy boy who unfortunately sustained multiple injuries and burns. He sustained multiple burns mostly affecting his limbs and sustained a fracture of his right Femur. Yousef has made a good recovery with regards to his burns. However, he was left with the aftermath of burn related scars.

In terms of his Femur fracture, it's currently externally fixated and he urgently needs an internal fixation procedure.

Mohamed

Mohamed is a 7-year-old child who suffered significant facial injuries resulting from an explosion and collapse of building he was staying in with other members of his family. Mohamed sustained severe burns and debris to his face. He fortunately survived the acute stage but certainly needs further surgical intervention for debris removal, skin grafting and reconstruction.

Reema

Reema is a 13-year-old girl, previously fit and healthy child. She has been a victim of an explosion and a collapse of the building she was staying amongst her family because of the current war in Gaza Strip. Reema has sustained approximately 36% burns of the surface of her body (affecting upper limbs, lower limbs, and face). Reema has fortunately passed the critical stage of her initial injuries. However, further assessment and surgical input is needed.

ثم سمعت أصوات أطفالي، محمد، البالغ من العمر 7 سنوات، وريما، البالغة من العمر 13 عامًا، يصرخان منادين عليّ وعلى والدهم، حسين. لكنهم لم يستطيعوا سماعي. كنت عالقة تحت الأنقاض، غير قادرة على الحركة.

فجأة سمعت صوت حسين، فبدأت بالصراخ طلبًا للمساعدة. صرخ بأعلى صوته حتى يسمعنا الجيران ويأتون لإنقاذنا. تجمع الناس وتمكنوا من إخراجي. قال حسين إن السقف قد سقط علي، وخشي أن يكون جسدي قد تمزق. لقد كانت معجزة أن نجوت، لكن الألم لا يوصف.

كانت جروح محمد وريما شديدة. كان وجه محمد ينزف، فمه مفتوح، وقد سقطت أسنانه. أما ريما فقد أصيبت بحروق عميقة وشديدة، وأصبح وجهها غير معروف المعالم.

ألقت الغارة الجوية بيوسف، البالغ من العمر 16 عامًا، تحت المنزل مباشرةً. وجده جيراننا. كان غير قادر على الحركة بسبب الكسور والحروق، فحملوه خارجاً.

عندما نادى حسين مرارًا وتكرارًا على راما، البالغة من العمر 15 عامًا، ولانا، البالغة من العمر 10 أعوام، لم يكن هناك جواب. عرف حينها أنهما قد قتلتا. بدأ الناس يبحثون عنهما مع حسين. وجدوا راما ممزقة الى اشلاء ولانا متوفاة من جراء إصابات بالغة في رأسها وكتفها.

في تلك اللحظة، تغير كل شيء إلى الأبد.

بعد دقائق، وصل المسعفون ونقلونا إلى عيادة العودة في مخيم النصيرات للاجئين. لم يستطع الأطباء والممرضون مساعدتنا بسبب شدة إصاباتنا. لذا نقلونا إلى مستشفى الشهداء الأقصى في مدينة دير البلح.

كانت أطول رحلة في حياتي. لم أستطع التوقف عن التفكير في أطفالي المصابين ولا أن أنسى جثث بناتي اللتين قتلتا. حياتي كما عرفتها قد انتهت.

في المستشفى، تم إدخالنا فورًا إلى وحدة العناية المركزة. حاصرنا فريق من الأطباء والممرضين. قاموا بتخديري. آخر شيء أتذكره قبل أن أغيب عن الوعي كان صراخ أطفالي.

على مدى الأيام التسعة التالية، أجريت لي ولأطفالي سلسلة من العمليات الجراحية.

في 20 نوفمبر، تم نقلنا إلى مصر لمزيد من العلاج الطبي. كانت الرحلة من غزة إلى القاهرة لا تطاق.

وصلنا إلى مستشفى عام في القاهرة. على الرغم من شدة حالتنا الطبية، إلا أننا تلقينا الاهتمام الطبي العادي . يبذل الطاقم هنا قصارى جهده لمساعدتنا، لكن الموارد محدودة.

لقد مر أكثر من شهر على تواجدنا في القاهرة، وتقدم حالتنا الطبية بطيء.

أبلغتنا إدارة المستشفى أنهم سيخرجوننا قريبًا لتوفير مساحة لمرضى آخرين.

لا يمكننا العودة إلى غزة الآن، ولا يمكننا الانتقال إلى مستشفى عام آخر في القاهرة. خيارنا الوحيد هو الانتقال إلى مستشفى خاص في القاهرة لمواصلة علاجنا.

لا يمكننا تحمل تكاليف مستشفى خاص. لذلك، نحتاج إلى مساعدتكم.

أنا طبيبة أسنان، وزوجي صيدلي. كانت حياتنا جيدة مع أطفالنا.

ريم

يوسف

محمد

محمد طفل يبلغ من العمر 7 سنوات عانى من إصابات وجهية كبيرة نتيجة انفجار وانهيار منزله. تعرض محمد لحروق شديدة وشظايا في وجهه. لحسن الحظ، نجا من المرحلة الحادة ولكنه يحتاج بالتأكيد إلى مزيد من التدخل الجراحي لإزالة الشظايا وزراعة الجلد وإعادة الترميم.

ريما
