Support For Quillan & Sarah's Flooded Studio

I am organizing this fundraiser for Quillan Hanley and Sarah Orton who have lost their studio and recording equipment due to a broken water main in the City of Nelson, resulting in serious flooding on the 500 block of Baker St, on the early morning of Thursday, May 19, 2022. Both Quillan and Sarah are graduates of the Selkirk Music Program and are active members of the arts and music community in Nelson. You may recognize Quillan from the band Heavy Airship and Val Kilmer & the New Coke, or Sarah Orton from Penny Shades and The Metre Maids. There was also equipment in the studio that was lost from musicians, Gus Dixon- Heavy Airship, Eric Hoodicoff- Val Kilmer & The New Coke & BC/DC, Daniel Slade- Penny Shades and Ness Benamran- The Misery Mountain Boys Trio, Penny Shades.

 

The full damages are unknown yet as Quillan is diligently attempting to dry and clean all of the gear and equipment to try and salvage it. He has had many of his instruments for over a decade and holds great sentimental value. Most of these items are particularly sensitive to water damage, and given the amount of time they were submerged under the 4-5ft of water, we are not sure if any is possible to save. At this point the value of the items affected are landing near 30k.

 

Sarah was the first person to discover the flooding in the Burns building, where their studio is located at 9 AM. The city was already working under the sidewalk outside of Mallards Source For Sports, where the leak apparently occurred at 3 AM. Their landlord was there and not aware of the situation outside or in. Sarah was the one who contacted another business owner affected; there was no flagging tape, no first responders. We are grateful that no one was harmed or electrocuted- especially Sarah. The city has not offered any compensation for the incident, and the expectation is for Sarah and Quillan to absorb all losses. As of now, Sarah and Quillan are working with a public adjuster and legal team to support them in finding what compensation is available to them for the traumatic loss, which will also result in significant legal fees.

 

As anyone who is a musician or involved in the music industry, we know how challenging it can be to make a living on gigs, touring, shows and album sales. The pandemic cut off all of these revenue streams for musicians, Sarah and Quillan included. Given the equipment was not leaving the space and money was tight, purchasing insurance was put on hold till performances and other revenue streams returned.

 

I am asking for financial support on behalf of Quillan and Sarah in hopes of replacing the irreplaceable gear and creating a new rehearsal and recording studio in Nelson. Sarah used this space daily to get her voice-over career started, working through grant projects and collaborative musical endeavours. They will be looking for a new studio space; any leads are appreciated, given the current housing crisis.

 

It has been heartbreaking to see Quillan navigating his immense losses. My hope is that our community is able to show up and help these two incredibly kind, creative and talented folks get back on their feet.
