My mother, who is 96 years old, has just recently been diagnosed with congestive heart failure and she also has dementia. My sister Connie has recently been diagnosed with throat and tongue cancer. She has been undergoing chemotherapy and radiation now for 6 weeks and is approximately halfway through her treatments, but is now hospitalized because she is unable to swallow even liquids and has now had to have a feeding tube placed. The drive back and forth to the hospital is over an hour, and the drive to chemotherapy is an hour each way. Radiation is 5 days a week, with a 40-minute drive each way. The wear and tear alone on the vehicle and the gas we are spending just to get to her appointments is taking a huge toll on us.
Having to leave and go to these appointments leaves my mother alone with no care, so I’m having to get people to try to come help, or I have to bring my mother with me to these appointments, as well as taking my mother to her own appointments. She has also recently spent several weeks hospitalized—three times now in the last two and a half months. I’m doing my best to navigate this; it’s all new to us. My sister is trying to stay in high spirits and have a good outlook on this, but it’s taking a toll on everybody mentally, physically, and financially. We have co-pays, bills due, doctor appointment payments to make, and there are MRI tests, CAT scans, PET scans, labs—it’s never ending. I’m only one person, but I’m doing my best to take care of my sister and my mom. I feel very alone and I don’t really know what to do, so I’m asking for some help and encouragement from my friends and family and people that are out there willing to just help.
Any donation would help, sharing our GoFundMe will help, your thoughts and prayers will help. Any suggestions or places I can reach out to that are available to help with certain things would be appreciated as well. I’ve also reached out to other avenues trying to figure out if I can find care for my mom when I have to be with my sister. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
