In October 2025, what began as a routine pediatric visit for back pain led to the shocking discovery of an avocado-sized tumor on Kayla’s lung near her heart. Thankfully, the tumor was successfully removed and found to be benign. However, complications from surgery left Kayla with a paralyzed vocal cord, severe breathing difficulties, and ongoing medical challenges.

After months of appointments, testing, and speech therapy, doctors recently discovered that her vocal cord has significantly atrophied and she now urgently needs a rare nerve transplant surgery to save her voice and protect her ability to breathe and swallow. Only a handful of pediatric surgeons in the country perform this procedure successfully.

Kayla’s next step is evaluation and treatment at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston beginning June 23, 2026. As the Boerma family faces mounting travel, medical, and therapy expenses, they are asking for prayers and support as we continue this difficult journey believing in Kayla’s complete healing.
