2020 has been a difficult year for everyone, but for some more than others. Our dear friend Eric "Eggs" Davis, known and loved by so many of you across the world, his loving wife Bara, and their adorable son Matyas are facing a more daunting 2020 than most.
Earlier this year, Eric, an amazingly healthy and energetic teacher and Gaelic footballer extraordinaire in his early 30s was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma, a cancer that originates in the lymphatic system and affects the white blood cells. It can be a serious form of cancer to deal with, but thankfully Eric was able to catch it early and he has a fantastic prognosis. Equally important is Eric's indomitable fighting spirit, a spirit all those who are fortunate enough to know Eric are very familiar with. Eric is confronting this challenge as he approaches everything in his life, with hard work, a positive attitude and love for his family and friends. As Eric contends with chemotherapy treatments complicated by the circumstances surrounding COVID-19, he and Bara's son Matyas is also facing his own challenges.
Matyas was born with Craniosynostosis, a condition in which the plates in a baby's skull close prematurely, causing premature closure of the fontanelles and potential problems for the long-term growth of the brain and shape of the skull. It is a condition that impacts 1 in 2,000 children born each year in the Czech Republic, where Eric, Bara and Matyas live. Matyas will have a surgery soon to allow for the expansion and growth of his son, and while his prognosis is absolutely excellent, it is yet another challenge these three champions have to face.
We are organizing a "Be Brave Don't Shave" November in honor of Eggs and in support of he, Bara and Matyas as they face this challenging time, made more complex due to the complications of COVID-19 that we all must contend with. We challenge all friends, family, teammates and colleagues of Eric or Bara to grow your mustaches proudly this November, and for the non-mustached of you, that you pledge something in honor of one of the mustaches in your life or gather pledges for you to do some other hair or fashion choice that is unusual for you!
Of course, we invite anyone to make a contribution unrelated to mustache growth, any and all contributions are sincerely appreciated by Eggs, Bara and Matyas and his community here in Prague and the Prague Hibernians. All proceeds will go to this incredible family and towards research focused on improving awareness and treatment of Craniosynostosis.
Thank you deeply for your support, and all the best to you and yours.
