My family is facing one of the most difficult times of our lives. Our 4-year-old daughter was recently diagnosed with a Wilms Tumor, a rare form of childhood cancer. After the discovery, she had to undergo surgery to remove her left kidney. Once the kidney and tumor were removed, a piece was sent out for testing. The results showed a high count of an aggressive gene mutation, which means cancer cells could still be floating around in her body and could cause a tumor to come back somewhere else. Because of this, her doctors decided she needed to complete a six-month chemotherapy treatment plan.
On December 11, she went in for surgery to have a port placed, and she bravely began her first chemotherapy treatment the very next day, December 12. For the next six months, she will receive one or two of three different chemotherapy medicines once a week. We have been making weekly trips for her treatments, doing everything we can to support her through this journey.
Before her mass was discovered, we were without insurance for a short time and were planning to restart coverage at the beginning of 2026. Her diagnosis happened during this gap, and since then, we have been working with the hospital to receive insurance through the state. Unfortunately, it has become a waiting game. Her first surgery was on October 31, and we are still unsure what surgeries and appointments will be covered. The financial department at the hospital has called often, sometimes mentioning the possibility of not allowing her to receive care because we are still labeled as self-pay. Her medical team has been wonderful, working hard to get her care approved each week, but every week brings new uncertainty.
The emotional and financial toll has been overwhelming, especially as we are currently without insurance. Every appointment, every treatment, and every mile traveled adds up quickly. We are doing our best to stay strong for our daughter, but the mounting medical bills and travel expenses are more than we can manage alone.
