Priscilla’s Breast Cancer Recurrence – Seeking Support for Life-Saving Care

Hi everyone,

Thank you so much for your ongoing support. I have entered the next stage of my current cancer journey and have encountered continued struggles with maintaining my financial, emotional and physical wellbeing.

I am in the process of navigating radiation oncology and other treatments post-surgery, which are proving to be outside of my financial capacity. My income has been significantly and detrimentally reduced due to my recovery period from surgery prohibiting my ability to return to work. I have not been able to rest and recover appropriately - my emotional wellbeing is severely impacted by this lack of reprieve and restoration.

I had hoped to housesit during my recovery period where I am unable to work. I was to sublet my rental and have some rent cost relief for 2 months. Unfortunately, this did not eventuate. Against doctors advice, I have attempted to return to work before I am able to do safely, and this was harmful to my health. I am struggling with physical pain, chronic fatigue symptoms and emotional and cognitive difficulties. These symptoms are impairing my ability to drive, engage with clients (who have asked I I'm sure if I'm okay to be working- that I am noticeably tired), and manage daily living.

I have extremely limited government support which is not covering my expenses, leaving me with only $75 after I pay my rent. In order to cover basic needs, I have been reliant on this fund which was designed to cover medical and other cancer-related costs. Now, I am unable to cover the costs of the life-saving treatments prescribed to me through this fund.

Additionally, I have been offered a fantastic opportunity to attend a heavily subsidised retreat designed for cancer patients, by cancer survivors. However, this is held in Sydney November 3-7th, and I do not have the financial capacity to pay for flights (approximately $400), minimal contribution fee ($300), cover my loss of earnings while I am gone ($600), and cover my rent ($500). This retreat would be of significant benefit to my wellbeing, as I am currently struggling to navigate my way through the ongoing distress and uncertainty of this journey.

Hi, my name is Priscilla.

In September 2021, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. What followed was a grueling journey of chemotherapy, radiation, and countless appointments that left me unable to work.

I had to survive on Centrelink which is not enough to even cover rent and used inheritance money I had planned to put towards a home, for living costs, transport and the therapies that helped me get through.

I truly believed that once treatment ended, life would return to normal. Instead I’ve lived with constant fatigue, cognitive and memory struggles, financial pressure, and the shadow of fear that cancer might return. I have been unable to return to work as Ive wanted and to reach my goals.

Now, just under three years later, my worst fear has come true. The cancer has regrown.

Why I Need Your Help

The cancer is hormone-positive and HER2-negative, and while it is currently localised, doctors can only offer a full mastectomy with no guarantees it will not return and the medical system statistics of a lowered mortality rate. The public system has been super challenging to say the least with multiple delays.

I need integrative care alongside public treatment to give myself the best chance at long-term healing to prevent a future recurrence and possible metastasizes and to possibly save my breast and myself from going through multiple surgeries that will take its toll on me mentally, physically and months of being out of action and needing care without the support needed for this recovery with no guarantees.

None of this is subsidized, and after years of financial strain, I can’t afford to do it on my own. And this is why I need your help.
