Support for Norma Jean Sierra

Donation protected
On September 29, 2018, Norma Jean Sierra was struck by and pinned under an SUV while waiting at a bus stop in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Media coverage of this harrowing event can be found here , here  and here .

After a battle for her life in critical condition, Norma was forced to leave Spohn Shoreline hospital due to not having insurance after the loss of most of her left leg, in addition to her left side being in a cast for multiple fractures.

The person who hit Norma has an insurance policy that only reaches a fraction of her current medical bills, Medicare will not kick in for at least 4 more months, and care critical to her well-being is needed now.

Unfortunately the state of Texas does not allow you to file a civil suit for home or retirement if those are the only held assets by a defendant.

In addition to monetary donations, the family is unsure how to navigate a long recovery process without the help of health insurance as they have called  311, MAP, Community Clinic, and People's Clinic and none can get her into the treatment she needs. She has been moved to Austin, TX in her critical state to be with her son.

The family is incredibly grateful for any help you can provide, even if it's just sharing this with your community.

Here is a message from her son and now full-time caretaker, Billy:

My mother is a good woman and has had a hard life. For this to happen to her so late in her life is the most unjust, unfair act imaginable.

I am going to have to provide constant care for her for the rest of both of our lives and am so unprepared and ill-equipped I feel as if she's been hit by that SUV again.

The first and most urgent goal is getting her in a physical rehab program to rebuild the strength she has lost and learn to be mobile again.

The second goal is to help cover the outrageous medical bills the driver's insurance will not cover. Finally, my mother needs to be able to afford a better wheelchair and a prothesis.

My mom walked to mass almost every day. She needs to be able to do that again one day.

Spohn Shoreline Hospital, who claim to be a faith-based facility in the CHRISTUS network, have turned her away for treatment. To file a complaint on Norma's behalf, you can do so here

Corpus Christi police department have not followed up with the Sierra family, or even done an initial visit or interview with Norma despite the severity of this case. To voice your opinion on this matter, please contact the CCPD .

Please consider donating to this family, as your help will literally keep a beloved family member alive.
