Support for Nicolas and His Family During Detention

Donation protected
No one should be torn from their family and beaten in detention, no family should be pushed into crisis by losing their father.

Please join us in supporting our community member Nicolas Carranza Herrera, a father and husband currently being held in Delaney Hall under inadequate and inhumane conditions. Nicolas is one of the 300 plus people that have been on hunger and work strike within Delaney Hall since May 22nd. The goal of the hunger strikers is to draw attention to the abuses of the facility including inadequate and rotten food with worms in it, denial of medical care, delay and cancelation of trials and legal proceedings, denial of legal counsel, and many other abuses. The strikers are calling to meet with Governor Mikie Sherrill within Delaney Hall, for immediate release of young, elderly, and medically ill detainees, for those inside to be reunited with their families, and for the total shutdown of the facility.

Nicolas has been living in the United States since 2019 and has navigated the legal process of residing in the country ever since. On the morning of May 5th Nicolas was detained in a randomized stop despite having a valid NJ driver's license and no criminal charges. He is a working husband and father to three young children, two 1 year old twin girls and one 5 year old son. His children are now separated from their father, his wife from her husband, and the whole family are now without their main financial support.

EPU has come together these past few weeks to support the family by helping cover some expenses, bringing the children up to visit their father, and keeping in touch with Nicolas' needs inside the facility. Now we are asking our broader community to help support Nicolas' family as he fights to file legal proceedings to be released and be reunited with his family.

Within two weeks of being detained in Delaney Hall Nicolas had lost ten pounds due to the poor quality of the food being served. He has since gotten sick along with many other detainees due to poor ventilation and lack of air conditioning on hot days, lack of medical care, and inadequate food. He is now 8 days into the hunger strike and is facing violence from the guards including severe beatings, pepper spray, and tear gas use in retaliation for the hunger strike. Nicolas' condition within Delaney Hall is currently deteriorating and we are seeking to get him released and returned to his family as quickly as possible.

Our goal of $8,000 will cover:
  • Legal fees and filings
  • Rent assistance
  • Car payments
  • Childcare for the family

Nicolas has shown enormous courage to stand with his fellow strikers and endure increasingly worse retaliations while fighting for justice not just for himself but for all those detained within Delaney Hall. It's our turn to stand up for him and his family.
