You may recall through all of the plastered photos a few months ago I turned 60. Because of this I had my annual wellness visit and while I felt healthy my results showed otherwise.
In November I was diagnosed with Stage 2 Prostate Cancer. I am very confident that with the support of my amazing family, friends and medical team that I will beat this.
Currently I am weighing my options between surgery to remove the prostate or doing radiation. Radiation is 45 visits, M-F for 8 consecutive weeks. Next week I have my PET scan to ensure it hasn’t spread anywhere else in my body and have a few more follow up visits scheduled after that before we decide on treatment.
Initially I wanted this to be a private battle and use the mountains as my escape but I am quickly realizing the financial impact my family and I are facing with the mounting medical bills, future office visits and missed work days. Despite our best efforts, managing everything has become increasingly difficult and am finding myself in need of help.
I also know I have a responsibility and an amazing platform to spread the awareness of early detection.
As a coach, a father, a husband, an uncle, a brother, a black man; I wanted to express the importance of early detection. Listen to your body. Get your PSA checked starting at 40.As men we tend to not go in to be seen or screened. Early detection is key including those with African decent as the risks are much higher.
Your kindness and guidance have always meant a great deal to me. Knowing that I can count on you brings me comfort during this time.
Thank you for always being there.
