Support for My Parents: Dad's Dementia & an Unexpected Move

Hi friends,

This is Scott (Gordon & Sharon’s oldest son), and I’m writing because our family is in a season we didn’t see coming, and we’re not able to navigate it alone...especially after a sudden turn this past week.

My dad has had a stroke, and he’s currently experiencing cognitive decline, with a likely dementia diagnosis ahead. He’s also had several recent falls, which has raised concerns about his safety and the level of care he needs day to day.

Additionally, both my mom and dad are dealing with significant mobility and vision challenges. That makes everyday life more difficult, and it means that our family needs to account not just for their current difficulties, but for the progression of my dad’s condition as well.

My brother, Chad, has stepped in to help in a big way. This includes providing a place for all 3 of them to live, driving my parents to doctor’s appointments, managing medications, and helping with daily needs. But that’s come at a cost. He’s had to miss work to do it, and the financial strain is starting to build.

At the same time, we’re working through the application process to get support through Medi-Cal and IHSS, but those systems take time. Right now, we’re in the gap, needing help before help is readily available.

And on Friday, April 10th, a new challenge presented itself: we found out that my parents and my brother need to relocate.

Their landlord sold the house my brother has been renting for the 3 of them, so they need to move very soon. Originally, the landlord told them they had 7 weeks to move, but on April 17th, that timeline was shortened to a May 15th move-out date. So, their tight window to find new housing and move, has become even tighter.

We’re now trying to find a new place where they can all continue to live together, somewhere that can support their current needs as well as what’s coming.

Lastly, transportation has also become a challenge, both my parents’ and my brother’s vehicles need significant repairs, and the only one my parents can safely get in and out of is the least reliable of the two.

So in a very short window, we’re trying to navigate:
• Increasing dementia care needs for my dad
• Lost income for my brother due to daily caregiving
• A sudden and unexpected housing transition
• Transportation challenges due to unreliable vehicles

We’ve set a goal of $16,000 to account for moving costs, vehicle repairs, and the most pressing needs we will encounter as Chad finds new housing for the 3 of them.

We’re hoping to raise funds to help cover:
• Vehicle repairs so my brother can reliably get my parents to their appointments
• Moving and housing transition costs (which will likely include purchasing a washer & dryer)
• Offsetting some of Chad’s lost income from caregiving
• Medical-related expenses while we move through the application process for assistance

This isn’t a long-term solution, but it would give us breathing room in a really critical season and help us make wise decisions instead of rushed ones.

If you’re able to give, we’re deeply grateful. If not, sharing this would mean just as much.

Funds from this campaign will be managed by my brother, who is providing daily care for mom & dad. The funds will be used to cover moving and housing costs, transportation needs, medical expenses, and to offset lost income from caregiving during this transition period.

We’re committed to using these funds carefully and specifically for the needs outlined above during this short-term transition, and I will be providing periodic updates.

Thank you for caring for our family at this difficult time.
