After the loss of my sister in 2017, my aunt stepped in and lovingly raised her son—my nephew—from infancy. After an almost four-year battle with metastatic breast cancer, my aunt has now passed away, and my husband and I are stepping in to take custody of my 14-year-old nephew so he can remain with family during an incredibly difficult time. We are childless and had not planned to become parents at this stage of life, but our priority is providing him with stability, safety, and care as he grieves yet another profound loss. In order to do this responsibly, we are facing unexpected and immediate expenses, including breaking our current lease to secure appropriate housing, purchasing a reliable vehicle, and retaining a custody attorney. I will also be taking a hiatus from pursuing my bachelor’s degree, and I will need time to secure full-time employment while navigating this transition. Any support—whether financial or through sharing this fundraiser—will help us focus on giving our nephew the secure, loving home he deserves during this transition.
