In Loving Memory of My Mother

On Friday night, my mother was admitted to the hospital after experiencing serious breathing difficulties. Throughout her stay, my family and I noticed a lack of urgency, attention, and basic care.

There were multiple times when my mother needed assistance and no one came unless I left the room to ask for help. Despite her ongoing distress, she was discharged at 2:00 a.m. while still clearly struggling.

Over the next two days, her condition worsened. When an ambulance was called, there were delays and confusion, even as she repeatedly said she could not breathe. Tragically, my mother passed away shortly after. Our family is still struggling to understand how this could have happened.

My mother was a former AdventHealth worker for over 15 years. She spent more than a decade caring for others, yet when she needed care herself, it feels as though she was neglected during the moments that mattered most. She was not just a patient. She was a mother, a loved one, and someone who deserved to be taken seriously and fought for.

We are raising funds to give my mother a beautiful and meaningful memorial and to help cover the many unexpected expenses our family is now facing, including funeral and burial costs, memorial services, transportation, arrangements, and other end of life expenses. Any support, whether through donations or sharing, means more than words can express.

We also hope to raise awareness about the neglect and disparities Black women continue to face in healthcare.
