What started as what we thought was a simple case of pneumonia has turned into something much more serious. My mom has been in the hospital since July 14th, and during her stay, the doctors discovered a bacterial infection they couldn’t immediately explain. She’s been seen by a team of specialists including a consulting MD, pulmonologist, infectious disease doctor, and pain management.
On day 10 of her hospitalization, she had to undergo two blood transfusions due to extremely low hemoglobin levels, likely caused by medication administered through her chest tube. After little progress, the decision was made to transfer her to Advent Health Tampa, where she could be evaluated by a cardiothoracic (CT) surgeon and hopefully get some answers.
Finally, on Friday night, we received a diagnosis: empyema, a serious infection that causes pus to collect in the space between the lungs and the inner surface of the chest wall. It’s been a relief to have a name for what she’s been battling, but the journey is far from over.
This unexpected and extended hospitalization has created a heavy financial burden for her. If you know my mom, you know she’s the first to give back, especially to children in need. Whether it’s helping a family afford sports fees or stepping up when someone in the community needs support, she gives wholeheartedly and never expects anything in return.
Now it’s our turn to show up for her.
Any contribution will go toward medical bills, ongoing treatment, and easing the financial stress during this incredibly difficult time. Thank you for your prayers, love, and support.
