Asking for help is not something I want to do, but my mom is in need. If you know my mom, you know she would be the first person to help someone else before ever asking for anything herself. But today, I am asking on her behalf.
My mom has recently been diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic lung cancer. After undergoing immunotherapy that, unfortunately, was not effective, she has now begun chemotherapy. The treatments have already taken a tremendous toll on her body, and she is struggling to continue to work. As a result, the financial burden of everyday life has become overwhelming.
This diagnosis was obviously unexpected and extremely scary, but it comes after nearly a decade of unimaginable hardship for my mom.
More than seven years ago, my dad, my mom’s husband, suffered a devastating brain aneurysm. Overnight, everything changed. He became unable to speak, immobile, and required around-the-clock care. Determined to give him the best possible chance, my mom spent countless days by his side in a rehabilitation center/nursing home, advocating for him, caring for him, loving him, and never giving up on him. She was with him day in and day out and even moved both of them to Indiana to make sure my dad was getting the best care possible. She put literally everything of her own on the back burner while still being the best mom she could be for me as well.
After years of unwavering devotion, she had to endure the heartbreaking loss of her husband last March.
Before she even had time to grieve, life asked even more of her. Her mother, Doris, aka Mimi, moved in with her under hospice care, and once again, my mom became a full-time caregiver. She lovingly cared for her mom until she, too, passed away shortly after my dad.
For years, my mom has carried the weight of caring for everyone else. She has given so much of herself, emotionally, physically, and financially, to those she loves. Just when it seemed like life might finally be allowing her to breathe again, she received her diagnosis of advanced lung cancer.
It feels incredibly unfair that after everything she has endured, she is now yet again fighting.
As a family, we have been deeply humbled by the kindness and generosity that so many people have already shown us over the years. We will never be able to adequately express how grateful we are for every prayer, every message, every meal, every visit, and every act of support. Your compassion has carried us through the toughest moments of our lives, and we will never take that for granted.
It is incredibly difficult to ask for help again, and we do so with humble hearts. The truth is, we simply don't know what else to do. Right now, my mom needs to focus all of her strength on fighting cancer, not worrying about whether she can pay her mortgage or keep up with mounting medical expenses.
If you are able to contribute, no matter the amount, it will go directly toward her medical costs and the everyday bills that continue while she is unable to work. If you aren't in a position to give, we completely understand. Sharing this fundraiser and keeping my mom in your thoughts would mean more than words can say.
Thank you for taking the time to read our story, for caring about our family, and for standing beside us once again.
UPDATE: Thank you to everyone who has donated, shared, and reached out. We are forever grateful. Unfortunately, Sunday night, 8/16/26, a large limb fell on my mom’s house during severe storms in the Louisville area. This has added another obstacle to my mom’s cancer battle. We would love if you could share our fundraiser again. Donations here forth will continue to assist with medical costs and bills, but also repairs to her house. We’re hoping to see light at the end of this tunnel, but it feels very grim right now. Thank you again.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.
