My husband Tony and I have always tried to handle life’s challenges on our own, but this year has brought us something we never could have prepared for. After our daughter was born in December, my husband began experiencing severe pain in his chest and back. At first, we hoped it was just a temporary issue, but as the pain grew worse, he went to the doctor. That’s when we learned he had a growth on one of his ribs, which had caused his rib to fracture. A biopsy revealed the devastating news: scar carcinoma of the lung.

He is now beginning radiation treatment and has a PET scan scheduled this week. With both of us not working after welcoming our daughter, we know the financial strain is just beginning. The costs of doctor’s appointments, copays, travel for treatments, and our daily living expenses will add up quickly as we focus on my husband’s recovery.
