My 15-year-old daughter has been hospitalized since April 11th, and our family has been facing the most difficult time we’ve ever experienced. She has struggled with GI issues since September, and despite multiple scans, a floroscopy, ultrasound, x-rays, CT scan, MRI of her brain, and even exploratory abdominal surgery, the doctors have not found anything structurally wrong to explain her symptoms. Over just 12 days, she lost 19 pounds because her body couldn’t keep any food down. The doctors were not monitoring her weight closely enough, and now she has a feeding tube to help stabilize her nutrient levels. They’ve told us that if her levels don’t improve, she could be at risk for a heart attack. The GI team believes she has Brain-gut syndrome, a condition where her body, overwhelmed by stress, trauma, and anxiety, treats everything she eats as a threat and rejects it. Once she is stable and not throwing up as much, they plan to send her home, but she will still need her feeding tube and ongoing care. As a single mom, I have not been able to work while staying by her side in the hospital and caring for her 11-year-old sister. I usually work full or part time as a delivery driver, but right now, my focus is on supporting my daughters through this crisis. When my daughter comes home, she will still need constant care, so I won’t be able to return to work right away. The financial strain is overwhelming, and I am reaching out for help to cover our rent, utilities, household expenses, gas, insurance, and phone bill during this time.
