Two hardboiled eggs: that's all I wanted.
Instead, I received deep 2nd and 3rd degree burns to 30% of my legs. The first ER I went to with a burn unit said to treat them like a bad sunburn. The next day, I called my PCP because something was NOT right. She sent me to another hospital with a burn unit, and I was immediately rushed to surgery for debridement, infection removal, and skin grafting. I spent a very painful week in the hospital reteaching my legs how to be legs.
I am home now, but the continued care after burns like these is extensive.
I am hoping for some help with the finances that come with that care, such as specific lotions I will need to apply 2-3 times per day for a year, sunscreen I will need to reapply every hour when I am outside or every 30 minutes if exposed to water, SPF 50 graded clothing, pressure garments, and other surgeries and continued care if it comes to that.
That's my story. A blip in time, but something that will affect myself and my identity for the rest of my life. As a 25-year-old athlete, I'm trying to come to terms with how this affects not only my physical ability to play, but also how I see myself all those years before as a young baseball player, as a middle school wrestler, as a travel softball player and team captain, and now as a 3x Women's AA College Dodgeball player (sounds hokey, but look it up - it's intense).
Asking for help is hard, but sometimes it needs to be done.
Whatever you can do, however you can help, it helps.
