Two years ago, in September of 2014, the man you see above was diagnosed with prostate cancer. This is our father Michael.
Our dad had prostate removal surgery on October 21, 2014. They were not able to remove all of the affected cells due to the compromise of other vital organs. At the time, we were lead to understand that a few cancer cells remained around the surgery site.
About a year later, to our surprise it was “reaffirmed” to us that it was stage four, terminal cancer. We had no inclination of this, and it seemed diagnosed all over again. Our family continued to fight, following every step of the recommended medical course of treatment.
The last two years have yielded our family to a place we could not have foreseen. To our dismay, no treatment took to either kill off nor halt the spreading of the disease. In what would be in hindsight, the last month of our dad’s life, he went from being independent, to losing his sense of balance and needing assistance for all mobility. His cancer had infiltrated the lymph system, therefore causing massive build ups of fluid in his body.
Despite having several medical professionals at our disposal, there were limits to their insight in the dimension of insurance coverage as it related to recommended procedures and resources. Our father had a comprehensive plan that covered most of what was utilized to sustain him during the traumatic final month of his life. Unfortunately, some of the recommended resources (i.e., biopsy sent to analize cancer mutation) were utilized at the doctor’s recommendation without the consideration of cost. In our grief and desperation to find a cure for Michael, we were unaware of the accrued costs.
We lost our father on December 3, 2016. He passed away of cancer-related health complication in the form of drowning from lymphedema.
We were surprised to discover that he did not have death benefits; a development that made little sense given his long career as a full-time social worker for non-for profit agencies in Rochester, NY. At this time, we are trying our best to help my grieving mother cope with expensive medical bills, and bereavement-related expenses that have the potential to compromise her ability to maintain the home she and her husband worked tirelessly to afford.
We’re finding that the cost of losing our loved one extends far beyond the empty space left in our hearts. It is through this campaign that we hope to support my mother, and utilize our loving community to ensure that basic bereavement expenses (and outstanding medical bills) are managed accordingly. Please consider giving any amount possible to help us support our mother, and lay my father’s journey to rest with dignity. Thank you for your time.
