On February 25th, my son, Mekhi collapsed at school during PE and was rushed via ambulance to the hospital. He was initially diagnosed with double pneumonia but there was an underlying issue causing chest pain and low blood pressure so the Kaiser ER Dept decided it best for him to be transported to Children’s Hosptial to be near an ICU. 

Before Mekhi could be transported, he flatlined. He was resuscitated but struggled to maintain electricity in his heart for the first 36 hours and flatlined two additional times. Mekhi was diagnosed with myocarditis and was placed on the heart transplant list within 24 hours of admission. 

Myocarditis is an inflammation/infection in the heart caused by a virus, such as the flu, which can lead to abnormal heart beat, heart failure and sudden death. 

Due to Mekhi being gravely ill, Children’s Hospital immediately placed my daughter and I in the Ronald McDonald Charity House so we could remain close to him. 

Mekhi was released from the hospital on Friday March 15th. His short term and long term needs are still being assessed. He will wear a Zoll LifeVest until his heart is stable enough for a pacemaker. A cardiologist monitors his heart activity remotely due to arrhythmia. The LifeVest is also a defibrillator and will deliver a shock to his heart should it stop. Mekhi will remain on the heart transplant list until we know if his heart can repair itself enough to sustain his life.
