Maykol left Peru in search of Asylum in the USA in April of 2024; he was granted a temporary protection order by ICE due to his risky situation in his home country. Despite having all of his legal documents up to date, and having his work authorization in his possession, Maykol was kidnapped off the streets of DC by ICE in early August.

Maykol’s family, his wife and two kids, largely relies on his income to survive back in Peru. Additionally, Maykol was transferred to a detention facility where he receives very little to eat, and pools his resources with other inmates to try to feed everyone.

During his hearing on September 10th, he was told that the ICE agents in charge of his case within the system had not filed for the asylum he was originally supposed to be granted, and so the difficult decision was made for him to self-deport, and was issued a voluntary leave order. He was then transferred to Louisiana, and no one will confirm for him when he can leave, or what can be done to assist him. The deadline for his leave order is October 10th, and there is no confirmation available that he will be allowed to leave, instead of being detained indefinitely.

Maykol is just one of thousands currently undergoing illegal imprisonment, forced starvation, unlawful deportation, and otherwise horrible living conditions, at the hands of the Trump Administration. It is increasingly apparent that these random and illegal detainments are becoming the standard, and Maykol and many others from South America are being robbed of their due process in the name of the “American Dream”.
