In 2016, I collapsed with a seizure and was rushed in for an emergency craniotomy to remove a golf ball-sized brain tumor. The surgery was only partially successful—they couldn't remove the entire tumor, and it left me with a terminal cancer diagnosis and a severe traumatic brain injury. At the time, my wife Christy was eight months pregnant with our fourth child, and our two foster sons had just been cleared for adoption. A month after surgery, the boys officially became part of our family, and our baby was born. Suddenly, we had six kids six and under, and I needed full-time care.

Miraculously, I've outlived my original prognosis by more than three times and have regained many abilities, including reading and being an active dad. I've had one recurrence, but thanks to a clinical trial, my tumor is stable for now. I can care for myself and am involved in our community, but I still suffer daily focal seizures and cognitive episodes triggered by stress and responsibility. I am unable to work, and after nearly a decade of this battle, our savings are gone and we're relying on retirement funds to get by.
