We all know Mark as such a great guy and a phenomenal Dad to Kristyn, Marissa, and Kaiden. In late March, Mark was battling a serious infection in his foot. He underwent a few surgeries to try and clear the infection which was dangerously close to the bone. A little backstory, seven years ago, he was diagnosed with diabetes which runs in his family. Over the last few years, Mark has had issues with his feet which brought him great pain. Back to March...after surgeries, Mark was facing a long recovery of healing and regaining strength. He underwent physical therapy and things were looking up. In early April, Mark was diagnosed with Charcot Foot which is a weakening of bones that can cause a myriad of issues with bones and tissues. He was on antibiotics and other therapies to clean the infection from his foot. Throughout all of this, Mark has been dealing with insurance roadblocks and issues which has added an additional strain on the family. His journey just kept getting more and more complicated, with additional treatments to the infected area, PT, OT, incision care, more medication, and significant weight loss. On May 1, Mark finally made it home after 32 days in the hospital and rehab. Things continued very positively for a few weeks and spirits were high. But, sadly, just a few days ago the infection reappeared with a vengeance. Discussions of another surgery and trying again to save the foot were happening just two days ago on May 29. On Tuesday evening, though, after discussions with the Infectious Disease Dr. and the surgeon, Mark and his family were left with a very difficult decision to make....Attempt another surgery and risk Mark's life with the possibility of a systemic infection, OR amputation of the left leg at the knee. After heartwrenching conversations, Mark and his family came to the decision that amputation was the safest and most medically appropriate option. Mark's own words, "Life changing, yes. Scared, yes. Lots of emotions on our family, yes, but we all agreed it was for the best."
Mark has shown such resiliency and courage throughout this entire ordeal. And his amazing children have been by his side throughout it all. I'm sure none of us can imagine being faced with this decision. Mark has had to be away from work, he's dealing with insurance and fees, and he is still being that amazing Dad that wants his children to be taken care of AND cared for during this emotional and trying time.
Let's wrap our arms around Mark and his children. Let's give back to him as he has always shown such kindness and love to everyone around him. Please consider helping Mark, Kristyn, Marissa, and Kaiden get through this difficult ordeal.
Thank you,
