Support For Mark Carles

Donation protected
This fundraiser is to help Mark pay for his extensive medical expenses during treatments.

About Mark:

Mark Carles is 25 years old and an avid runner in the Staten Island community. He has run cross-country for St. Peter’s Boys High School and at Hunter College.

In October 2018 he was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 Fibrolamellar (fibro-la-mel-lar) Hepatocellular Carcinoma, the incurable and rare liver cancer (1 in 5 million) that occurs in adolescents and young adults who have no history of liver disease.

Currently, there are no known causes of fibrolamellar, nor effective treatment options other than liver resection surgery which can be curative before metastatic spread. Because the liver is the only organ which can regenerate itself, removal of diseased portions of the liver does not leave the patient with compromised liver function due to decreased liver size. Liver function typically returns to normal within 2 to 3 weeks and liver size within 3 to 6 months.

Mark underwent a 16 hour resection, along with the whipple surgery, in February of 2019 after a failed chemotherapy regime. The surgery successfully extended Mark’s life and he is regaining his health with plans to start a new chemo cocktail this upcoming Fall.
